Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

My students are passionate about listening to, and telling stories. Students, like Cristopher, and Anahi are consistently curious about current events, sports, politics, natural disasters, historic findings, and enjoy being the first to report news to me!

Whenever we hold class discussions about the topic we are studying, my students are always try to make connections to the world around them. Recently, we have been studying the human rights, and have been reading excerpts from longer works about heroes, like Cesar Chavez, and Mother Jones. We have been learning vocabulary, as well, and my student, Leslie, raised her hand to make a connection to events that recently occurred. She recalled that many women marched in the streets of downtown LA to raise awareness of women’s issues, and gained PUBLICITY for doing so. All students, like Leslie, Cristopher and Anahi crave for knowledge that they can understand, apply and report to others.

I know that students appreciate learning about practical ideas that can help them build on their existing knowledge. I also know that students enjoy researching about topics they exhibit curiosity about. I want to continue to present my students with ideas and topics that motivate them to learn.

This IMovie group project will develop my students academic and social-emotional skills because not only is this project research based, but also based on working in teams. My students will be responsible for reporting about a present-day activist who is fighting for human rights. This project will engage the students in finding, evaluating, and agreeing on which evidence to report. Having taught the students about the three types of appeals: ethos, logos and pathos, I expect them to agree on, and incorporate at least one appeal in their findings during the report.

In Their Own Words

In groups, we will create an IMovie using IPads so that we can be news reporters, just like Carl Azuz, from CNN student news. We will report about a current activist fighting for human rights, so that we can raise awareness in our community about human rights. Many of us feel intimidated by people who enforce laws we do not understand, so our news reports will help clarify some confusion.

Each group will have four people, and each person has a role. There is a team lead, a researcher, a note-taker, and a publicist. Each role is important, but the team lead has the responsibility to create a checklist, to report to the teacher, to make sure everyone is working, to help all the group members, and to keep things fair. The team leads are essential to the groups because they are in charge of solving problems when they come up. This teaches us to work together and trust our team lead.

This project is important to me and my school community because we would like to raise awareness about human rights in our school. Some of us were unaware that human rights even existed, so we know we should inform our peers about human rights, and of what current day activists are doing to support human rights. Knowing this will motivate us to inform our parents and also empower us to make a change!
