Kindness Counts...Making the World a Better Place!
My students need lapel microphones, headphone microphones, a handheld microphone, books on empathy and kindness, and tripod to help them create videos to share with their families about our compassion service projects!
I teach many English language learners, who are anxious to succeed and learn something new each day! We have a dedicated staff of teachers at our school, who bring their best to the class and to each and every lesson they teach.
Some of my students come from homes that do not have everyday technology, such as home computers or even basic Internet access.
I teach at a Title I school where nearly 50% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch. They are working their hardest to try and learn as much as they can and to develop good study skills.
My Project
I teach fifth graders. At this age, students are starting to become more socially aware. They are beginning to notice more in the world around them and my students in particular are drawn to help! This year we have been working to develop more of a growth mindset and strengthen the ideals of true character. How we treat others and what we do to help make the world a better place really does matter! I want to give my students the opportunity to tell their stories and share their thinking with their families and our larger learning community.
Students need to be further empowered to demonstrate the pillars of character, to help others, to show compassion, and to be ones who give and share.
Laying the foundations of kindness, compassion, and caring in the elementary years will go far in helping them develop into adults who do the same.
After reading these inspiring books that showcase compassion and perseverance, students will develop service projects to help others in our community and world. In this way, my students will truly influence successive generations. As they create their own service projects in the community, they will share their stories and experiences in video fashion. Through the use of the microphone headphones and using programs such as Seesaw, they can share how this project inspired them and came to life. By using the iPad tripod, microphones, and our green screen, they can create video news clips of themselves or share stories of how people benefitted. These clips will then be shared on our class Instagram page. As students tell the stories of others in need or how they helped, they will be building their storytelling skills, deepening their compassion, and truly taking charge of their learning and development as members in society.
