Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The dancers of TCHS are a phenomenal group of 10th-12th graders who train daily to hone their skills. These learners are physically expressive, socially conscious, and creative individuals. As a community we view education and art-making as tools for empowerment, self-reflection, and social change.
Giving our adolescent learners a platform to produce dances and share their stories is a big part of the dance program.
As a component of the 11th and 12th grade curriculum, my students each work to plan, develop, and propose a new piece of choreography that will be created for their peers. Throughout this process of peer-directed instruction, my students have the opportunity to hone their leadership skills and creative voices as they work towards publicly producing their first dance pieces. My students have begun to transform our community by sharing empathy and autobiographical stories. In preparing for these performances, we not only create dances, but also consider the artistic elements to support the choreography from costume, and lighting, to set design. I am so proud of our work and am asking for support to help address the logistical challenges of producing art for our community.
My Project
In the Choreographer's Workshop course, adolescent learners propose, create, and produce their own pieces for our spring dance performance, New Voices. Many of these students select autobiographic content as places to start telling their stories through dance. Last year when leading the course, students chose to make innovations in creating their own music scores. To do so, they attempted to record spoken text, sung music, and generated their own beats.
Our classroom is under-equipped to support my students' ambitious visions.
We are requesting a macbook pro, software, and a protective case to help support their vision. With the mackbook's built in software of Garage Band and Imovie, my students will be better able to create multimedia content to support their artistic visions. With the support of requested technology, students can edit music, import and cut preexisting music, create video projection, and create promotional content for our showcase. If we gain this new technology, I may be able to edit our curriculum to include more advanced projects, like having the students create their own digital portfolios. I am looking forward to see how this project can lead us towards new innovations.
