My students have so little and I want to give them so much more. All of the students here come from homes below the poverty line, and I want them to have the chance to experience something that can influence their lives.
These students are so disadvantaged that many of them don't have access to the simplest supplies at home.
I want them to be exposed to as much as possible so that they don't fall behind in their future educational endeavors. They come from broken homes, are living with an aunt or grandparent instead of Mom and Dad, and many even come from homeless shelters or abused family shelters. They have a very bleak outlook on what life has to offer them and need to know they CAN make a difference in their lives with the power of an education.
My Project
Since I run a "Literature Through Cinema" elective class, many of my students are ecstatic about learning about films. In their free time, they are constantly watching films and writing their own scripts for potential films. This is the only class in the entire school that offers students the chance to express their creativity through expressive storytelling. They came up with the idea to collaborate together and create a script where they can creatively express themselves through the art of film-making and producing. Unfortunately, they are highly disadvantaged because they live in such poverty stricken homes and cannot afford to buy even the most basic equipment.
The fact that I run a film class inspired some of them to take up film-making and producing as a career.
Some aspire to become cinematographers and some of them aspire to become directors. Should we get funded, these audio shorts that the students create will go in their college portfolios as a creative submission, and they will continue to make films throughout the school year. They will learn how to take responsibility and learn how to work together to solve problems during the film making and audio editing process.
