"I can't wait to see what we are going to learn today," is a common phrase I hear from students entering my classroom. Seeing the excitement on their faces day after day only reiterated the necessity to bring more technology and the art of Coding into the classroom to peak this curiosity to learn.
Students need to see their potential, in order to reach their potential!
I teach at a Title I school, where students come to us from an area of high poverty. Over 70% of our population is considered at-risk and all of them qualify for free lunch. We have an equally diverse ESL population in every classroom. Our goal is to prepare our students for success in both college and future careers.
My Project
This project will teach my students how art and technology can be integrated in the 21st Century to create a living museum exhibit. This exhibit will not only display a piece of art work; but also provide a verbal story about the artist to be heard by the viewing audience.
My students are excited to create art with their hands and share their unique life story with others via verbal storytelling.
This is especially useful for my ESL and Special Education students who can participate without feeling pressures to perform.
Students will use graph paper to construct a self-portrait. This will help students understand the basic pixilation process in gaming systems like Minecraft. To make this high tech and accurate pixilation’s, students will take a picture of themselves on the iPad and use PhotoBrick app to transform their portrait into a larger than life pixelated picture Mosaic that could be 64 x 96 inches in size. These mosaics will then be constructed using the LEGO resources in this project. Upon their completion, these mosaics will be photocopied into the Seesaw app, so that the LEGOs can be reused by the next group of students. Then, students will share their unique life story as they compose a poem entitled “I am…”. These poems will be created as a final farewell for fifth grade students to their families. Students will record their poems via QR Codes that will be on display beside their photocopied Mosaic picture on bulletin boards. Parents will be able to use their own phones or a school provided iPad to listen to the student’s poem being read aloud by their own child just prior to graduation. This will be an outstanding platform to bring together storytelling, visual arts and digital technology for 5th grade students and their families.
