This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"The journey of a lifetime starts with the turning of a page."
--Rachel Anders
While my students are motivated and enthusiastic to learn, they lack the resources and background knowledge to be successful.
With 100% of our students on free and reduced lunch, living in a small community, many of my students are deprived of exposure to books and real-world experiences. Many of my students have never been beyond the few miles surrounding our school and are often lost or confused when we read books that happen in different places or cover unfamiliar curriculum. It is my goal that by the end of next year, students will be exposed to a variety of books, develop global awareness, and enjoy rigorous reading and writing.
My Project
Resources will be used in four ways:
(1) Read-aloud books are connected to science or teach character lessons
(2) Develop global awareness though maps that help them with identifying and understanding the world around them, especially as they come across unfamiliar places during reading.
(3) Create a comfortable and organized space for reading through bookshelves that clearly display unit and read-aloud books.
(4) To create an engaged and interactive classroom by having access to supplies such as glue, notebooks, pencils, sharpeners, and erasers which will help students to create interactive notebooks for each subject. Whiteboards and markers will increase student engagement and provide opportunities for them to engage with material by responding to reading, writing, and creating.
All of these materials will create a classroom dedicated to helping students succeed by offering opportunities for rigorous reading and writing and background knowledge about the world.
All of these activities will not only provide, reading, writing, listening and critical thinking skills but will ultimately make them college and career bound by giving them skills to be successful beyond the walls of my classroom.
