Students Design Physical Robots to be Shared Digitally Across Continents

My students need all the parts to design ten maze solving programmable robots with a digital design that can be shared across continents!

My Students

My students are pre-engineering students interested in applying their math and science skills in a hands-on learning environment. As their teacher, I am always searching for new and innovative ways to keep them up to date in this world of ever adapting technology.

This project will add a very applicable electrical, programming, and digital design project in order to introduce students to global technological design elements.

Students will explore robotics, research sensor programming, create their own digital robot design and programming, and "market" their designs globally with an open source educational approach.

My Project

In order to have my high school engineering students explore the global nature of technology, I want them to develop a robot design that can be digitally shared across the globe. This digital design will be 3D printed and will require simple inexpensive electronic parts to create.

In order to digitally share the design globally, students will develop: a digital code in C++ (or Arduino IDE) that can be shared with the robot; a bill of materials needed; the digital files needed to 3D print the robot; and a detailed instruction and operational handbook.

The items we are requesting for the project will be the physical parts to make ten robots. They include a programmable Arduino microprocessor, and a breakout board for that processor to connect it to the distance sensor and the motor controller. The students will have to learn to program the microprocessor in order to sense objects and move the motors in a way to get through a maze in the quickest time. We would also need the motors, wheels, batteries and some nuts and bolts to get the robot in working order, storage containers to keep the robots safe after use, and ping pong balls which be used as the rear caster wheel.

Students will be able to promote and share their class design within the educational community, with the goal of the design being successfully created on six continents. I have been able to design several robots with students in past years (for example this robot will be like a larger version of: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1708240) but have not yet been able to get funding to make a class set. The final class set will be able to be used for years to come to teach engineering design and programming in engineering.
