Teacher: Okay, put your math in your math folder, and get out your homework folders."Class: "What math folder?" "I lost mine." "Mine is ripped." "My mom said she couldn't afford it!" "Do you have any extra?"
My group of fourth graders are extremely bright, witty, and ready to explore each and every day!
We live in a very rural community surrounded by woods and farmland, but we would not change it for anything. We are proud of where we live and how we have grown to overcome many challenges. Our district is relatively new, and the goals we have achieved are astounding. Even at 80% free and reduced lunch rates, we have been ranked first in our conference and in the TOP 20 OF ALL MISSOURI SCHOOLS for student achievement. Low income does not equal low expectations for our students!
My Project
These folders will be used daily by my students. All children will receive one folder of each color to keep track of work by subject. For example, the blue folders will be for reading materials and the red folder will be for homework. We say, "STOP! Did you remember your homework folder?" Thus, the homework folder is red like a stop sign. When we are working on lengthy projects or longer writing compositions, students may also need to be able to keep track of materials for several days or weeks at a time, so these folders become essential.
Folders may seem like such a simple thing to have in the classroom, but they are actually a luxury for many students. Even though they are put on the school supply list each year, some parents do not buy them, and even if they do, folders are often lost or destroyed after a lot of daily use. This project will ensure all students are equipped with this basic supply to be organized and successful.
Using color coded folders not only makes transitions easier during class, but it keeps students organized and encourages them to be independent in their orderliness.
This is a skill that becomes more and more necessary when students begin to change classes in Junior High/High School and eventually go to college. Organization is ultimately a life-skill, and these color-coded folders will begin that habit!
