This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"Sitting still is overrated. It makes sense for the opera or for meditating, but in most classrooms and child care centers, it's given far more honor than it deserves. Children need to move." ~Tom Hunter, National Association for the Education of Young Children.
I work in a small urban middle school with students with Autism Spectrum Disorders, Emotional Disturbances, and ADHD.
My classroom serves as a home base and safe place for these students. Often they come to work in my classroom away from the normal distractions in their classrooms. I often have students who wish to work while standing but do not have the appropriate furniture to meet this need.
My Project
My students will use this standing movable computer desk daily. I will be able to move it around my room to accommodate each student. I love that it has enough space to accommodate not only their laptop computer but a writing assignment at the same time. This desk will help me further meet the needs of my students.
My students want to learn.
However, sometimes their bodies and a need to wiggle gets in the way. Providing them a location to wiggle and work at the same time will not only help increase their work production but how they feel while they are doing it. I often have students frustrated by their lack of ability to control their bodies. This desk will help me meet their needs! Any donation big or small would be very much appreciated!
