Have you ever met a 9 year old rapper, a 10 year old film maker, or a 6 year old journalist? I have! They are my students! They are creative and want to express themselves using tools other than pencils and paper. With the right tools they could produce rap videos, films, or news reports.
My students live in homes where resources are scarce.
About 86% of our students qualify for the free or reduced lunch program. They face challenges daily, both personal and academic. With the right tools one can pique their creativity, engage, and motivate them to use their learning to make quality projects. They deserve to have access to materials that will help them meet their potential and have fun while learning valuable skills.
My Project
Our library media center is a place all of our students visit frequently to choose reading materials or to engage in other activities. Our school is working toward creating a maker space where students can create and experiment in a way that enhances their experiences in science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics. We currently run a club called Ready, Set, Robot, where students program small robots. Now we'd love to start something new called Lights, Camera, Action! In this setting students could work through the writing, planning, and technical processes involved in creating videos or pod casts related to their learning objectives.
With this project, students will be able to visit our library media center to represent their learning in creative and concrete ways.
They will brainstorm, write, plan, and produce podcasts and videos that both interest them and represent their learning. Every week our students participate in an enrichment program that allows them one hour to pursue a topic in which they are highly interested then create a project based on this topic. This project will allow them tools they need to create.
