My students need nonfiction science and social studies books, a video camera, pencils, poster board, and notebook paper to document their interactive lessons.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn." -Benjamin Franklin.
My students come to class each day with an appetite for knowledge. I want to provide my students with experiences that will submerge them in the topics that meet 4th grade curriculum requirements.
Most of my students come from low income families and about 80% of the school receives free/reduced lunch.
According to Brian Greene, "Science is a way of life. Science is a perspective. Science is the process that takes us from confusion to understanding in a manner that's precise, predictive and reliable - a transformation, for those lucky enough to experience it, that is empowering and emotional."
As a classroom teacher, it's my job to empower students and create lifelong learners. My students work hard and deserve the opportunity to have real-world and hands-on science experiences and social studies explorations.
My Project
I would love for students to use the book resources to research the 4th grade learning objectives. After researching these topics using the nonfiction science and social studies books, I would guide students in recording picture collages of their topics using the panoramic camera. The pencils, paper, and posters will be used to aid the students in creating their scenes and props. Students will use these pictures to present topic such as geology, force and motion, key historic people, biomes, and electric circuits to their peers. When others view these panoramic pictures, they will feel as though they are submerged in the learning objective. These pictures will be posted on our class website for other students to view.
Students will become teachers and will be allowed to take ownership of their learning.
While working in small groups, students will develop life skills in the areas of partnership and communication. Students will be able to share their ideas globally and have a voice!
