This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Many of my students have not been exposed to literacy, nor do they have an opportunity to do so at home. I teach in a high poverty district where many parents do not have the means to help their children understand the importance of literacy. I would like to encourage them to delve into literacy.
I have a classroom of 16 Pre-Kindergartners, 9 boys and 7 girls.
Three of my students are Spanish speaking, who are desiring to excel in English. My students are eager to learn new things and love to delve into new projects. They love reading as a class as well as individually. They are constantly asking to be read to and I often see them "reading to each other" thus the reason I would like to get them a variety of reading materials and supplies.
My students are from a high poverty area where 100% of them receive free breakfast and lunch. Their love for learning amazes me every day and I want to help give them the opportunity they desire. With our district being so low income the opportunities for funding are limited and parental donations are scarce as well. I want them to have the materials which will help them excel and keep the love of learning within their hearts.
My Project
I currently have a very small reading and listening center. I am dreaming of enlarging the area and making it more student friendly. I hope to have an area that has a plethora of books to read as well as books on tape to listen to. I hope to offer them technology which will enable them to use literacy within technology as well. I want this environment to be comfortable and relaxing so they will want to come to our library and listening center. I currently have these two centers close to each other, yet separated a bit as to encourage children to attend both centers. I would like to keep this theme, yet improve it and make it more student friendly.
It will enable my students to get excited about reading and using technology to learn to read.
The hope is to continue to encourage my students to want to take the ideas of what they did during the day home and share it with their families. This will benefit all of my students, but will also enable my ESL families to learn more English in the process.
