My students need pencils and erasers to sketch out their designs and clay to create their 3-D sculptures.

There is a great deal of untapped artistic talent where I teach. Every time one of my students sees a piece of pottery they ask if they can make one too. I want to make sure they have access the resources they need and want to explore art, culture and self-expression.
There is a great deal of untapped talent where I teach.
My students are hungry to learn and try new things. Every time I show them artwork or they see work created by other classes they are curious. "How did they do that? What is that made of?" I have noticed a particularly prevalent interest in ceramics. The students want to try it. Unfortunately the art department does not have enough funds to buy clay for every student. I immediately began brainstorming ways to get the funds to give them the opportunity to discover for themselves what ceramics is all about. I know that they will be so thrilled to create something with their hands.
My students will create 3-D sculpture with the clay provided by this project. We will begin by researching the history of ceramics and learning about some of the uses it has had throughout history. They will learn about how to construct their sculpture so that it does not collapse. The final stage will be to paint their sculpture and present it to the class. The students really enjoy creating things and will really appreciate their artwork when it is complete! The students will view several different varieties of ceramics and decide what type they will create. Some may choose a mask and some may create a tea set. After they decide they will use the pencils and erasers to sketch and plan their project. This is a vital step in the art making process. Now they will "get their hands dirty" and create their masterpiece with the air drying clay. My students need pencils and erasers to sketch out their designs and clay to create their 3-D sculptures.
There are a few reasons why getting this project funded will mean a great deal to my students.
First, they appreciate the fact that they have had a say in what materials they are using. (I have polled the students about what to buy ahead of time.) Second, they feel cared for that people want to give them every opportunity in the arts. And lastly, they feel accomplished. There is something so satisfying about building something in 3-D.
