Ms. Kramschuster from Kansas City MO is requesting technology through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need the six TI Nspire CX CAS handheld computer algebra systems / calculators to study very high level mathematics, science and engineering applications.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Modern mathematicians, scientists and engineers solve problems with the aid of technology. The types of software used in these professions is out of reach for us, but these handheld computer calculators (CAS stands for "computer algebra system") is really a wonderful substitute.
Our students are not well to do, for the most part, but they are bright, well-adjusted, curious students who well deserve the same opportunities experienced by their wealthier peers and to have experiences that suggest a future in STEM fields.
The handheld computer algebra system technology can play a valuable role in these experiences.
The handheld computer algebra system technology makes it possible for students to do so much more than traditional calculators. These machines have spreadsheet and data analysis capability, as well as a full algebra menu and a grapher with regression analysis, etc. Students will use these machines to engage in a variety of real-world problem solving activities which would be difficult or impossible to tackle in the absence of supportive technology.
STEM instruction often suffers from lack of real-world type problems for students to consider.
But real world problems do not lend themselves to "simple numbers" that students can easily manage "by hand." Having high-level supportive technology in the classroom much more closely mimics the way that on-the-job mathematicians, scientists and engineers really operate, which both enriches the experience and allows students to envision their own futures engaged in such work.
