My students deserve the opportunity to see the world. I want them to leave 5th grade with an understanding of all that life has to offer. I can do this, and so much more, with the use of technology.
I teach at a Title I school in an urban district.
The majority of my kids receive free/reduced lunch, and they come from very diverse homes.
Our school has an incredible staff who love these children like their very own. In this way, my students are lucky. But when it comes to technology, we just aren't able to give them everything we want.
My students are energetic, inquisitive, and make me laugh often! Right now, we have enough technology in my room for about a third of the class to use at once.
With the addition of three Chromebooks, we will be close to having a laptop for every two students. This would mean that my class would have access to technology even more often, can take more responsibility for their learning, and will be more focused on their work.
My Project
Right now, my students are using our existing Chromebooks for many different things. They are using a website for personalized math instruction. They are practicing reading skills on a variety of other sites. They are researching simple machines and creating documents to share their learning.
We recently started using Google Classroom, which has been so motivating for them. Students are actually asking me to post assignments! We are learning a skill that they could realistically have a career in later on in life.
Having more Chromebooks available would allow students to complete assignments in a more timely manner; less wait time for a device, and more time on learning. A new favorite for many of my kids is coding. I love that they are learning a skill that they could realistically have a career in later on in life.
I saw an incredible change back in November when my students received our first DonorsChoose project of Chromebooks.
They were so excited to explore, learn, and engage in the curriculum.
The addition of more devices in our classroom would increase this excitement in ways that I can't even imagine.
