“If we teach today as we taught yesterday, we rob our children of tomorrow” -John Dewey. My school is very fortunate to have four iPad carts to share throughout our school. Each iPad cart has been assigned to multiple grade levels. iPads are shared between the 462 students enrolled in our school.
Because of the commitment of our teachers to use high rigor and relevance in our instruction and our authentic approach to learning with this new, interactive technology, iPads are in high demand and not always available for use in the art room.
Because I teach art, I am only able to use the iPads with a particular grade level during a specific time slot. Many times I have tried to sign out an iPad cart and have found one not available. Additionally, if I use this technology with one class of a grade level, I need to be sure that I will have access to the iPad cart for all of the classes in that grade level, typically a three day stretch for each day of the project for each class.
My Project
With a classroom set of iPads dedicated to the art classroom, all students will be able to self-monitor and self-assess their progress throughout their art projects. Students will no longer need to wait until the iPads become available or have to rush because we only have access to the iPad cart for a limited time. Students will have the opportunity to manage their own electronic portfolios, upload images to our online art gallery and post their artist statements describing their art work, with minimal intrusion on limited art time. Students will be able to manipulate traditionally made artwork and create brand new works of art directly on the iPads, transforming the art classroom to using ‘Modification’ and ‘Redefinition’ on the SAMR model of technology usage.
Due to a very generous donation from Burlington Coat Factory, an iPad charging cart has already been purchased for our Fine Arts Department.
We are hoping to fill the cart with a classroom set of thirty iPads for our students, one DonorsChoose project at a time. Thank you for believing in our students and teachers!
