My students need subscriptions to a class set of Scholastic News and Storyworks magazines to have high interest, non-fiction materials to read and learn from.
My students enjoy reading high interest text. It is always challenging to get everyone reading something they are interested in. Current events spark all of my students' interest. They are interested in what is happening in the world. By the end of the year, I want them reading for fun and loving it.
My students are in a suburban area that is increasingly being impacted by the economy.
Most come from very hardworking families, working multiple jobs so that they can stand on their own. Each year we have more and more students who have families struggling to make it and who often have to move in with relatives after a job loss.
My Project
I am requesting 24 subscriptions to the nonfiction, high interest Scholastic News Magazines and Storyworks for teaching ELA and Science.
During my Reader's Workshop, students pick a just right book to read along with a nonfiction piece and a brain break book. With the Scholastic News, students will have not only a nonfiction article, but a magazine filled with current events. This will spark their interest, and they will want to dig deeper into the subjects they are reading about.
Writer's Workshop uses a lot of nonfiction articles to get ideas of writing structure. Storyworks magazine has writing ideas along with different stages of writing for students to learn from.
The donations to this project will improve my teaching practices as we dive deeper into Reader's Workshop and Writer's Workshop.
This type of teaching is individualized for every student. I want every child to love reading, writing, and to be successful and feel good about their learning. High interest, current events are a great start to not being able to put a magazine down because of its great articles.
