Writers workshop is a part of my everyday teaching. We spend an hour per day perfecting our craft of writing. We do this by studying authors and genres. My students practice the writing process many times through out the year. My belief about teaching is writing is at the core of children success.
I teach in an elementary school of 500 students.
The free and reduced lunch rate is 48%. The culture is diverse. Our elementary school is the oldest in out district which opened in 1951. On average I have 20-25 students and I work along side 3 other 3rd grade teachers.
My Project
My students will use the materials to help guide them through the writing process. The chart paper will be used to record students thinking while studying authors and genres. The journals will become writers notebook where the students will practice writing like the author or genre studied. At the end of the writing process my students will publish their writing. There they will use the books, markers, pens, colored pencils and paper. In all the supplies will engage the students in the writing process.
Students struggle with wanting to publish a piece of their writing.
But when given the tools and real books to publish they feel like real authors, that gives them the motivation to publish! For example a student this year is unmotivated to publish and does not have the desire to write. However, when given the right supplies he produced a beautiful piece of writing. Maya Angelou said. "there is no greater agony than barring an untold story inside you."
