My students need, "We Beat The Street", a high interest novel to improve their literacy and also the discussion guide. The teacher's manual will help me facilitate.
My class consists of students who have reading deficits and find traditional textbooks boring because they have difficulty relating to the stories. I wish to expose them to great books. High risk students often feel isolated. “We read to know we're not alone.”
― William Nicholson, Shadowlands
My students are assigned to an alternative setting for varying reasons which can range from inappropriate behavior to socioeconomic conditions leading to a state of transition.
My school has teachers and administrators who spend a lot of energy ensuring that students have meaningful experiences while in attendance. Many students exhibit behaviors consistent with feelings of abandonment and acceptance. They often question the importance of material being presented due to their outlook on life which is shaped by their circumstances.
My Project
My students will be drawn into the selected title, We Beat the Street: How a Friendship Pact Led to Success, because it is based on real people who come from backgrounds similar to them. Through discussion groups based on the novel, students will exchange meaningful ideas which have the potential to help them adjust their interpretation of education and develop critical thinking and conflict resolution skills. As they engage in reading, they will increase their ability to comprehend grade level text and apply information to solve problems.
My project is going to make a difference because students who are engaged become lifelong learners.
Their future will be brighter as a result of their experiences with participating in reading activities which demonstrate how hard work and commitment has the ability to change situations for the better even in circumstances of extreme poverty.
