My students need an electronic cutter (Cricut), mats, tools, transfer tape, and vinyl to bring the element of graphic design to our projects and fundraisers!
Cricut, Cricut, what do you see? I see eager faces looking at me! My students are so involved in technology in their daily routine and are eager to use technology in other areas. We are blessed with a couple classroom computers and even one iPad, which are both compatible with the Cricut!
My group of fourth graders are extremely bright, witty, and ready to explore each and every day!
We live in a very rural community surrounded by woods and farmland, but we would not change it for anything. We are proud of where we live and how we have grown to overcome many challenges. Our district is relatively new, and the goals we have achieved are astounding. Even at over 80% free and reduced lunch rates, we have been ranked first in our conference for student achievement. Low income does not equal low expectations for our students!
I had my personal Cricut set up when my students came in one morning, and they were completely amazed. I showed them the machine, its capabilities, & the computer program. This even led to a discussion of the field of graphic design, print shops, and the business aspects of having this machine. My students do not have luxuries like this and need these experiences that may lead to careers.
My Project
This Cricut is not just for the teacher to use! Yes, it will be used by me to create and cut task cards, math manipulatives, reward certificates & tokens, even magnets and brag badges for my students to use. What is most important, however, is that my STUDENTS will actually use the Design Space computer program to create a variety of things using different mediums including magnet sheets, wood, vinyl, paper, foil, and more. Students participate in a reading fair each fall, so they can utilize this machine to add detailed character models, setting dioramas, and plot sequences to their projects. This is just one of the many ways students will use this Cricut to incorporate art and graphic design into their learning.
We can also use this in fundraising efforts as well. Students may create personalized key chains, water bottles, tshirts and more. Then they will market, advertise, sell, design, package, and deliver the products all on their own. They will even track sales & figure profit!
This project will enhance my students creativity in all subject areas.
A Cricut can lead to possibilities my students don't even know are possible. They will love the technology aspect of using this machine, would could even lead some to the career of graphic design. I am so excited to see how this machine can change the way I plan projects and the way my students view their potential.
