About My Students
Chloe has taken on a leadership role in the school and carrying it out into the community. Chloe is selfless; she is concerned about the larger whole rather than herself. She wants to ensure that the school community and the community that we serve is well taken care of.
Chloe decided on her own, to interest her time and energy into helping those in need. She started focusing on specific groups within the school, then she expanded it to the community. This specific project is her expansion from those in need in the school to the larger community. She wants to serve the homeless. She wants to ensure that they have clothes, food, personal care items, etc; all of which are basic needs for humans. She realizes that everyone has needs and everyone deserves the chance to be successful in life regardless of their circumstances. Chloe understands the plight of the poor more than any other high school sophomore that I have ever seen.
This project will prepare Chloe for her future with Peace Corps. She is determined to spend at least two years donating her entire life to serving the needs of others. She will learn inter and intra-personal communication skills. One of the primary common core standards is that students will graduate from high school with the communication skills necessary to communicate one-on-one and in a large group setting. This project will teach Chloe how to communicate with various individuals and then, when she shares her results, she will learn large group communication. She will learn team work as she works with others to accomplish her project. She will have to get others to buy-in to help support her cause, and she will have to teach others the skills they need to help further her cause.
In Their Own Words
My project is to provide what help I can to the people that need it. I will be making packs for the homeless that include: basketball shorts, shirts and toiletry items. I want to help others and encourage others to help others. I am trying to get others to truly care about other people. The homelessness rate is high and doesn't seem to decline. I want this project to push students to want to care about others and to want to care about making a difference in their community.
For me this opportunity means the world; it is a start to bigger things I plan to do. My teacher is helping me with not only her support but her excitement. It makes me want to do more and more as I see how proud she gets. I will also be using this project to show other kids my age that you don't have to be an adult to make a difference; you don't have to be rich to make a difference either. I believe that the best way of showing that is to actually make a difference and get real results.
This project is important to me, my school, and my community because the homelessness rate, not just around here but everywhere, is much too high. I go to school with people that have been homeless and I am sure there are current students that are homeless. Helping my community is the ultimate goal. With this little push, the homeless could be successful in finding employment and moving from homeless and hopeless to hopeful and determined.
