My Students

Nonfiction stories ROCK! But who really wants to read a boring article? Third graders are at a turning point in their learning. Many students have the ability to read higher level texts, but won't due to the length and attractiveness of the article. Kids need high quality, interesting articles!

My students are in a small suburban area that is increasingly being impacted by the economy.

They come from hard working families, working multiple jobs so they can support their family. Each year we have more students who have families struggling to make ends meet and who often must move in with friends or family members after a job loss. The students enjoy reading high interest texts. It is challenging to locate text that all students are interested in reading. Current events spark my students' interest. They want to know what is happening in their world. By the end of the school year my hope is to have them highly engaged in nonfiction texts.

My Project

I am requesting 70 copies of Scholastic Magazine Storyworks Jr. for all of our 3rd grade students. Storyworks Jr. is a new Scholastic magazine designed specifically with 3rd graders in mind. Our 3rd grade students are at many different levels throughout the year. Storyworks Jr. recognizes this and differentiates their level of stories and articles. Finding high interest, engaging texts that incorporates literature and informational texts spanning across the curriculum is difficult. Many of the important skills needed for higher level reading can be found in this magazine. Cause and effect, author's purpose, summarizing, main idea and details, and text structures are all included in the core skills.

For 24 years teaching kids how to succeed in reading has been a passion for me.

Your donation to this project will increase the interest level of all 3rd graders in our building. It will allow my 3rd grade teaching team to dive deeper into Reader's Workshop with our kids. This type of high level, deeply engaging text will help us to individualize instruction for every student. I want every student that leaves 3rd grade to be successful and self-confident in reading.
