My students need laptops and wireless mice as part of my Read 180 implementation project. The program requires students to work independently on computers to increase comprehension skills
At my school, we have several students who are testing at basic and below basic levels. Without the assistance of supplementary programs like Read 180, I fear our students will continue to struggle. We have too many low achievers and not enough special education support for all of these students.
Next year, our English curriculum is getting rid of our Practical English courses, leaving our low-achieving students to be placed in all regular English courses.
Most of these students still need additional assistance. Currently, we do not have a supplementary program to assist students with literacy skills. Most English classes focus on critical analysis of novels and students who do not grasp the basic concepts will be left struggling. With the aid of Read 180, students will have a chance to work on these vital curriculum skills, while still working in their regular English classes. By the end of the school year, it is my hope that these students will be on track for success and can test out of the Read 180 program.
My Project
All students are placed in core English classes at the beginning of each school year. Now that our district is getting rid of Practical English, all students will be placed in regular English and expected to succeed. With Read 180, students will have an extra English class to supplement their learning in the core English class. The program is designed to aid students in three different areas: whole group instruction, small group, independent reading, and computer instruction. With the purchase of the laptops and mice, students will have access to their individualized learning programs that are technologically enhanced and geared specifically towards their needs. The technology component is just as important as the whole/small group instruction they will receive.
With the donation of the laptops, my students will be one step closer to literacy independence.
The students who will be placed in this program and will benefit from the individualized skills learned will greatly succeed in their regular English classes. They may start the year below basic, but with the help of the program, they will hopefully be on track by the end of the school year.
