This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
When I was a young musician, I loved the challenge of learning new music. As a teacher, I know that if I want my students to become better music readers, I need to expose them to new music on a regular basis.
I work at an urban arts school in the Midwest.
Two-thirds of our students qualify for free or reduced price lunch. Budgets are always tight, but this year, we didn't receive any funding to purchase any new music. My students need the challenge of playing music that they've never played before.
My students are so eager to learn new music. When we do get new music, they are so excited and want to jump into the song right away!
My Project
Each year in May, our entire music department (choirs, orchestra, bands, jazz combo, guitar ensemble) put on a Pops Concert as our final concert of the year.
The new music I have selected will be used by two of my bands for this concert in May 2016. My students need new music - Man of Steel, Suite, Tower of Power Greatest Hits and
At the Movies with Danny Elfman - for our annual Pops Concert.
Your donation will help ensure that my students are challenged by learning new music.
Too many times, schools that are under-funded use the same music year after year. I want to make a bigger impact than that for my kids. They deserve to be challenged, and they deserve to know that I will help them meet this challenge every step of the way.
