My students need books such as Ancient Times, Daily Lie in the Maya Civilization, Ancient Civilizations, Gifts from the Gods, and The Poet King of Tezcoco.
I want my students to be self-motivated learners who will pick up a book that tickles their interest and find fascinating facts about what we are learning in the classroom.
The books will also, Empowering Students Through Art by providing visual stimulation for our unit art projects.
I teach 100 6th grade students daily; who enjoy learning tidbits about the civilizations we are studying.
We are a 5th/6th grade center with around 725 students in Missouri. We are a factory town with a significant immigrant population shift over the past 15 years.
My Project
As students finish the daily lesson, I would like for them to be able to read informational texts about the civilizations we are currently studying. These books would provide additional texts to add more interesting information than their textbooks provide.
At the end of each unit, I like to have an art project to Empower Students Through Art by having them complete a drawing, painting, or diorama to represent the civilization we have studied.
A student's success in school is significantly changed by how much they read daily.
To encourage students to read we must provide them with a wide range of texts and various reading levels.
