The students in my classroom are true learners with a love for reading. Any day you walk into my classroom you will see kids reading, talking about books, or writing about books. By the end of this pivotal year I want them to be true readers!
My students are AMAZING!!
Many come from homes that do not have any books. They crave the chance to check out and read books at school. They love to get their hands on the latest book that everyone is buzzing about. Setting and meeting reading goals is just part of our classroom community and they encourage each other to reach goals. My school, the principal, and teachers have all worked hard to make sure the students know that reading is crucial to success in school and success in life. The kids live and breathe reading and when a book changes their life, it changes my life hearing them talk about it.
My Project
I am requesting a copy of Wonder for each student in my 4th grade class. This story is about diversity, acceptance, courage, and compassion, among so many other things. My students will be heading off to 5th grade next year in a new building, with new teachers, and new students. The lessons they learn from reading this book will be something they can hold in their hearts and use to change the way they and others treat one another. Kids can be mean. Kids can be bullies. I hope kids can take the lessons from this book and make a difference.
I want each of the 4th graders to have a copy of Wonder to read (we read it in class as a read aloud and they absolutely LOVED it) and read again, and again, and again, as we as adults do with our favorite and beloved books.
For some of our students it will be the only book they own.
