We Have Caught The Reading Bug and It's Becoming Contagious!
My students need more chapter books and a bookstand! I am so excited because most of my first graders have really taken off in reading this year and I want to keep it going!
I love to teach children to read, and this year my class has really taken off with their reading! I tell them that they have caught the reading bug! I have four different reading groups that I meet with each day, and they can't get enough! They want to keep reading! I am so excited to witness this!
Many of my students began this year at a beginning first grade level or slightly below their reading level.
By January most took off and I want to offer them more to read. Many times in first grade, students transition to chapter books around April or May, but this year it is happening sooner. I have purchased several book sets myself for each group, but I need help to keep it going!
I am so excited to see their enthusiasm for reading! We are a National School Of Character, and many of my students take a leadership role encouraging some of my others to read to them. They partner read and this is also making a difference for my classroom because they are encouraging each other to read all of the time! Reading is going on most of the day, and I am taking pictures all the time because I am so proud of them. We have caught the reading bug!
My Project
Since I have four different reading groups that I meet with each day, I need to have four different book sets for each group, depending on their reading level and interests. I have a good amount of short story books for the groups, but now that most are becoming higher level readers, they are looking for books with more content. I am using some of the chapter books I purchased myself and we read them together in the group settings. We work on main idea, predicting, summarizing, journal responses and more! What has me so excited is to see their excitement as they come to their reading group anxiously ready to read more, and the more they read the more fluent they become!
The excitement for reading has become quite noticeable in the classroom and we energize each other. It has become contagious in a way! Every group gets the reading bug from each other! I want to keep this momentum going, so that is why I need more chapter books and this bookstand.
I selected a variety of book levels for this project.
That way each reading group can have new books to read with me. The variety of books also gives an incentive to the different groups to see what they can work towards and what can be next for them to read! I also selected a book shelf to store these new books on! I plan to keep adding chapter books to the shelves and that will also spark interest! I am so excited to see my class enjoying to read! I want to keep the reading bug going!
