My Students
We have free reading time at the end of the day, but no joke books to read! The struggling readers would love to have a more engaging and less intimidating type of book to read.
I work in a city school where the students are in lower socio-economic classes. Most students qualify for free and reduced lunch. There are many ELL students (English Language Learners). Many students cannot afford to buy books, so the classroom library is their main source of literature.
My Project
We have a variety of styles of books in our classroom library, but no joke books. The kids love to read funny books and having joke books will be a great way to have humorous books in the room. Reading jokes are also a great way to teach idioms, figurative language, and rhyme.
I have many ELL (English Language Learners) who would benefit from reading jokes. Jokes will help them with nuances and word play within the English language. Joke books are also less intimidating to the emerging readers in my classroom.
