My class is full of students that are struggling with what is called normal math. They are craving math that can be applied to what they know or what they do.
I have a large majority of students that feel disconnected with school and its purpose for them for their future.
I teach in a high poverty school in rural Missouri. I teach freshman through senior students. These students do well in tech programs at our school and are wanting to see math in the classroom that they can immediately use in their everyday life.
My Project
Sphero is a robotic ball that can be used in the math classroom to introduce students to coding. Sphero has 3 apps that you can use with the robot. The first app allows students to control sphero with a remote control. The second app allows students to control sphero with a drawing. Finally, the third app gives the students the ability to code. This is where I want my students to land at the end of a great coding unit in my class. Writing code is extremely relevant in each and everyone of our students life. Every app that they download is written in code. Giving the students the ability to write code and learn this skill will open up a great potential of opportunities that they would never have had access to otherwise. This will also give them exposure to careers and college degrees that they might have never heard about.
Funding this project for my classroom will create an engaging environment that is applicable to the real world.
This will open up opportunities for students that might not have thought of college as something they would like to do after high school or even jobs that pertain to mathematics.
