My students need two EcoSTEM Pollination Kits to study the important role of pollinating insects, and constructively build a pollinator and butterfly habitat.
My nineteen students are inquisitive and active learners! I try to teach them the importance of being a lifelong learner and problem solver. I work hard stressing the value of persistence, problem solving, and dedication relating to challenging lifelong learning tasks.
My fifth graders thrive when they can demonstrate conceptual understanding through active learning, real life application, peer collaboration, and artistic expression.
They are active learners! At times, they are solving fractional problems from a recipe card, measuring those ingredients, and collaboratively baking it in our classroom convection oven. Other times, my students thoughtfully develop and carefully illustrate a hardback children's book featuring their four-year old year-long mentoring partner. I strive to provide relevant and real-world experiences directly related to the curriculum objectives.
My Project
The requested EcoSTEM Resource Pollination Kits will provide a goldmine of information, hands on learning, and problem solving opportunities for my budding scientists! Teams of students will be assigned a pollinating insect to research and orally present to fellow classmates. Using the kit's classroom set of microscopes, students will observe and journal about these pollinator insects. Next, they will help design and build a raised bed serving as the pollinator habitat. Students will plant and tend to the (kit included) native flower seeds along with learning about important elements of nature that effect gardening. Students will tend to kit provided caterpillars and observe and journal their flight to becoming a butterfly!
This enriching and engaging sustainable community study will weave elements of writing and math into our core science study.
I foresee this project making students more aware of their surrounding natural environment, and more proactive in ways they can preserve Earth.
