Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We start our morning with the Teacher stating that the students are CHAMPS! They are and need to be told that daily. They also know that this is an acronym for coats and backpacks put away, homework turned in, all notes on the teacher’s desk, make dismissal changes, pencils sharpened.
My students live in an urban setting dominated by a low income Hispanic population; 100% of students qualify for the free or reduced lunch program.
Our school building is the oldest in the district; the current campus is 107 years old. We currently have students from multiple countries enrolled here also. Some of those countries include; Vietnam, Thailand, Iraq, Laos, Niger, El Salvador, Dominican Republic, China, Kuwait, Mumbai and Cambodia. We have many students that are in transition. These students are very happy to attend school and are extremely willing to learn. The majority of the students are English Language Learners and are very visual and need the manipulatives to help them understand concepts. Most students live very sheltered lives with little money to go to museums and places to experience things. They have limited or no background knowledge of most concepts. They deserve the chance to learn.
My Project
We are in a very urban setting and have no resources to teach rocks and minerals. I have collected some over the years personally and have brought those into the classroom, but it isn't enough. They need to see minerals and test hardness and streak. They need to observe luster. They need to touch talc and feel it's silkiness and know what it is used for. They need to see and feel the differences in sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rocks. The most important things is for these students to get their hands on rocks and minerals.
They will use hand lenses to look at and examine these samples. The students need to conduct simple experiments on these samples to better understand them. We need enough that all students can be observing and working with a sample, not just waiting. They need to be fully engaged in rocks and minerals, not a bystander to the lesson.
My students will finally have the opportunity to actually see and feel a variety of different minerals and rocks.
Every student will have a chance in the course of the unit to work with all the different samples. All students will be actively engaged. Research has shown that students who are actively engaged in hands on lessons learn more. I want my students to learn. My students want to learn. Help my students learn by donating to this project.
