With the rigorous curriculum standards that are in place, students don't often have time for hands-on activities. As a library media specialist, it is my goal to provide students with the space to utilize items that fit into the STEAM model that allows for hands-on activity.
Our students range from extreme poverty and up.
We live in area that has a nuclear power plant. Most of our revenue comes from the plant. We are small school district, but full of potential. Our school is committed to the one-to-one initiative grades K through 12. Students have technology at their fingertips daily. However, those fingertips need some more hands-on activities to help encourage learning and inquiry. We want to produce students that are ready to tackle careers in the STEAM industry, by affording them access to technology and hands-on experiences.
My Project
The robotics resources requested will part of a newly created Makerspace in the elementary/middle school library. Students will be able to access the Makerspace to experiment and learn with new materials. I want students to have a place where they can experiment, where they can learn it's okay to fail, and to try again. In addition to the robotics items requested, we will be adding more items to the Makerspace to allow for more inquiry. All items in the Makerspace will fit into the STEAM movement. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) This is just the beginning for us!
Donations will allow for us to purchase a Robotics kit and explanatory materials for using the kit.
It will be available to students at all times, as well as teachers for use in the classroom. A Makerspace will enhance students' lives by providing them with opportunity to explore topics that they might have the opportunity to explore otherwise. The intent is to use these materials to help students discover new ideas and the careers that use these ideas, leading to potential future plans.
