My students need 20 Kindle Fire tablets because my students love reading and being able to do interactive activities while in class.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Every day my students read a book of their choice and with a limited classroom library, it's difficult for them to find something worth reading. At the beginning of the school year, my students scored several grade levels below the 9th grade, and it's been my goal to simply get them to read more.
My students are excited about high school but are faced with troubling circumstances all around them.
Even though majority of my students have low scores in reading, I have worked with them this year to encourage picking up a book just because. I have used our school's PBIS system to encourage students to read while rewarding them with "class bucks" that allow them to earn special incentives. This system has inspired my students to read during their "free time" which has increased their level of reading comprehension. Since we have this PBIS system school wide, allowing my students 20 minutes of class time to just read helps create a calm environment for instructional time.
The Kindle Fires will give my students access to thousands of books, and I will not hear, "I can't find anything good to read" anymore. It will also give the students access to e-book versions of classroom texts, which will let students read texts that the school physically does not own. It will also allow the entire class to participate in interactive activities such as Kahoot or Socrative which helps them to study.
These Kindle Fires open up another level of learning to my students, which ultimately is preparing them for their future.
When my students enter college they will be so into reading that reading an entire chapter will be a breeze.
