"What we value about music and literature are the moments that they create in our minds when we encounter them." - Stephan Jenkins. "Empowering Students Through Art" and quality literature can make for exciting, hands-on learning in our music classroom!
How to best describe my music students?
They are inquisitive, thoughtful, caring, and brimming with talent! My students come to music ready to sing, say, dance, and play. Even though they come from poverty, they only look forward. Our school empowers our children to succeed!
I would like to expose my students to Shakespeare's Hamlet and then work with them to create a musical surrounding the story! We will first read the children's version of the play, Hamlet For Kids. After many discussions and interpreting the text, we will then work on composing music for the musical using the Finale software. My students will work in groups to create melodies, lyrics, and rhythmic ostinatos that will fit the mood of the scenes. I plan to encourage my students to combine both modern and Shakespearean text in their music. We will use the sewing machines, fabric and accessories to make peasant costumes for the chorus to wear. Some of the more difficult costumes, such as Hamlet, Ophelia, Claudius, etc. will be purchased. The chorus will perform on the two risers that are requested. We have no risers at our school, and I believe having these two risers will allow my students the chance to be seen and recognized for their hard work!
Donations to our "Empowering Students Through Art" project will allow my students to combine quality literature, music, and drama in engaging ways.
Making connections between text and music requires higher order thinking, for the students must first understand what is written and then expand upon that knowledge to include a new medium, music. Thank you for considering our project! “This above all: to thine own self be true.” ― William Shakespeare, Hamlet
