So often during science, the students in my school get to watch or read about scientific discoveries and engineering projects. Our fourth grade students are ready to engage in the learning themselves with EcoSTEM kits that will bring science to life in the classroom.
The fourth grade students at my school come from various backgrounds and live in high poverty neighborhoods, but they are not really very different from other kids their age.
They get excited about learning and are eager to share their knowledge with others. My school is a Title 1 neighborhood school located in southwest Missouri that has over 75% of students receiving free and reduced-price lunch rate. The teachers in my building are passionate about meeting the needs of the students and work diligently to address behavior and academic concerns. While there may not be a lot of funding for extra resources to support student learning available, we contribute what we can to provide the best for our students. Our school motto is, "Expect the Best!", and that's exactly what we do.
My Project
The EcoSTEM kits that I have requested will provide the fourth graders in my school with a hands-on learning experience that incorporates science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Currently, our students have access to videos, books and limited materials that they can use to engage in learning during science. These kits will allow them to work individually and in small groups to conduct experiments and build as they the explore science concepts of energy and pollination. The "Energy Kit" will bring science to life during our fall unit by encouraging students to experiment with electrical circuits while they are learning about energy sources and work together to build a solar-powered item. During our spring unit on animal adaptations, students will use the "PolliNation Kit" to build their understanding of the interactions between plants and animals through the development of a monarch butterfly corridor.
Your generous donations will help provide our fourth graders with the materials they need to interact with science and not just study it.
These kits will supply the resources needed to conduct experiments and develop engineering skills that would otherwise not be possible to accomplish with the limited funding that we have available for science. By funding this project, you are potentially opening up a whole new world of opportunity to students by sparking interest in STEM careers!
