My Students
"Never again."
That is what we teach when we study the Holocaust, but we know that these are just words unless we convince our students that behind those words are individuals. That is the purpose of this field trip. We want to show students what "never again" looks like through the eyes of a survivor.
We are a rural community outside St.
Louis with limited diversity. Students are open-minded but lack experience with people different from themselves. They are interested in others, so we use this field trip to take them to the city and introduce them to people who are different from them, so that they can see that they are people, just like them.
My Project
Students will embark on a docent-lead tour of the Holocaust Museum. They will see artifacts, videos, and hear the story of European Jews and the rise of the Nazis in Germany and their destructive reign during WWII. They will hear personal stories of local families who fled Europe, either before of after the Holocaust, as those stories are woven into the exhibition. Afterward, students will listen to a local survivor share a story of the Holocaust and life after. Students will then reflect on what "never again" means to them, and how they can help make the world a better place.
Reading memoirs and watching documentaries and movies are all great ways to teach students about the Holocaust, but nothing replaces meeting an actual survivor.
It makes the stories and history real, and that will help students truly understand why "never again" is so important.
