Thirsty for STEM: A 3D printer for our Makerspace

My students need a 3D printer for a makerspace, so they can create and design, as part of their STEM curriculum.

My Students

A typical day in my school is filled with 7th and 8th grade students learning and creating. I am an instructional coach. By the end of the year, I'd love to see leaders emerge as they begin to create and innovate. "Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower"- Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple.

Our school is in a small, rural area, in the South.

Our free and reduced lunch rate is 68%. We have 800 7th and 8th-graders in our junior high. Our students are great! They seize any opportunities provided them. Unfortunately, our school is very old. It was built in the 1950's and still looks very much the same. I would love for our students to have the same opportunities provided to them, that they would receive if living in an urban area, so that they can compete in the job force, with the same equality of any other student from anywhere in the United States.

My Project

My vision is to provide STEM opportunities for our students. We have some technology, but we have nothing in the way of STEM equipment. If we receive the 3D printer, we will set up a makerspace in the library, so students can come in and create using the printer. How awesome would it be to create and print fossils to study, instead of just studying them in a book? My plan is to incorporate it within their science classes. My hope is to add other equipment in there, as well over time.

If funded, this will change education for so many students.

They will get to experience engineering and technology, as they create and bring learning to life in their hands. They will not be held back because of their socio-economic status any longer. I'm so excited at the thought of seeing them create and learn in this space.
