“Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I may remember. Involve me and I will learn.” This quote from Benjamin Franklin directly ties to the idea of making math meaningful. By involving and engaging students in mathematics using a hands-on approach, students will exceed learning expectations.
Our school is unique and truly reflects the diversity of our community.
In our inclusive setting, we have students of various abilities, modalities, and strengths. Our classrooms and instructional choices need to match our students' dynamic needs, so that together we continue to learn and thrive. What makes our school so special is our passion for learning. This June, our school recently transitioned to a modified, year round calendar. Students have been continuously learning throughout the entire year.
In addition, our school just launched a program called Leader in Me. Stephen Covey created this program as a means to encourage and empower students to find their unique abilities and unveil the leader within themselves by building upon individual strengths. We launched the program in November and are happily practicing the 7 Habits of Happy Kids.
My Project
This year we adopted a new math curriculum and my scholars are in need of additional manipulatives to impact their overall learning experiences. Young students learn best when given the opportunity to engage in learning using a hands-on approach. I am requesting a class set of pan balances. Our new curriculum engages students in activities to measure and compare weight. These balances would allow my students to work in groups to weigh a variety of objects and compare their weight in the classroom. We currently only have one balance, which makes it difficult for each group of students to study the weight of objects in our classroom.
This project will make a difference in my kindergarten classroom by increasing the level of engagement through a kinesthetic approach.
In addition, it would allow more students to engage in an activity weighing objects.
