My students need a simple green screen kit and camera tripod for creating new settings and worlds for our filmmaking club.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I created the Film Club at our school three years ago, and it has been a big hit with those students interested in theater, acting, and writing. So far, we've produced and created 8 short films on YouTube that far exceeded my expectations, but when kids get into something, they really get into it!
The students in this after school club are a diverse range of thespians and writers, or just those kids who want somewhere to hang out after school.
They range in age from 11 to 14, with some film club alumni coming from high school to help create our films. These are kids with big ideas (often too big- I can't tell you how many zombie movies I've had to scrap because we can't afford the explosions and make up, and no one wants to be the person explaining to parents why their kid's clothes are now ripped up and dirty). These are kids who will be the next generation of Oscar winners.
I'm requesting a decent tripod and a green screen. Now, the tripod is pretty essential- we need to steady the camera for many of the shots. However, the green screen kit is what we're all really excited about. So far, we've only been able to write stories that involve a school setting. Now don't get me wrong: we've had tremendous success coming up with scripts that involve school. However, a lot of my students want to go outside the classroom, and since there's definitely no money for field trips in our district (we're undergoing huge budget cuts this year), at least we can use this green screen to create the illusion of, say, space, or an African savanna, or wherever the child's imagination takes us. This will also give my students insight into how modern movies are made.
This club has really inspired many of the members to be more creative and harder workers.
And the best part is at the end of a long, arduous project, they have a record of their efforts to keep and share for as long as YouTube is around (forever, maybe?). Many are complaining that the Oscars this year lacks diversity; well, we here in the Film Club are certainly doing our part to change that for future generations of filmmakers: www.youtube.com/bowmanfilmmaking
