A lifelong love of reading . . . it is what all reading teacher's hope to create. It is my hope to create that by linking students into popular young adult series. In my class, students are not just numbers and scores, they are people with personal interests who need books that speak.
My students lives are extremely varied.
I teach in a district that struggles with poverty as well as other issues. My students live in a small city and the surrounding county areas, so finding one book that connects with all of them is difficult. Because of this, I strive to bring in a great deal of diversity in literary topics and genres.
My Project
In our classes, we use the reader's workshop model. In this model, teacher's read a text aloud to the class and then students read independently to apply the same thinking skills to their own text. These books will be used throughout the year to study plot development, characterization, figurative language, author's purpose and style, and more. Students will be inspired by these books to continue to read a given series or author.
My students need to think reading can be interesting.
So often they are given older books with content that is not appealing or relate-able. These books will have a positive impact on my students by creating interest in a given series which leads to them reading more text and more frequently. It is the power of connecting to something you enjoy that causes you to believe in its importance. That is what I want for each student I teach.
