Mrs. Latson from Ferguson MO is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need a Word Family book set, an Early Literacy Reading set, and Fly Guy books that are just right for them to comprehend and enjoy their reading experience!

Reading is an integral part of our entire day. Everything we do revolves around reading words. I've noticed that I still don't have enough books that are on the level of my struggling readers. It causes them to become discouraged if they can't find just as many books in their baskets.
My students may have obstacles in their lives that the average child does not encounter.
They come from low-income, high need homes. Our school receives 100% free breakfast and free lunch. I know most of my students do not have materials and resources at home to carry out the task of being a whole student when they return home. They may be low-performing and are behind a grade level or even two. I try to give them as much of what they need in the short hours they are in my classroom.
Adding more books to our classroom library will encourage several of my struggling readers to continue their journey of becoming a Super Star Reader. I always tell them that if they would just try their best, never give up, complete the process, they will become better readers. They can be so discouraged already because they recognize that they are behind. Many times they say "I can't read" but I say,"oh, but yes you can." Then I like to have a book that they truly can read and their eyes light up because they are able to read it from beginning to end. Right now I need more of those types of books, easier words and shorter lengths, so they can see success quickly. Even though I am a 2nd grade teacher, many of my students are reading on a Kindergarten or 1st grade level. I never want them to feel that there is no hope for them.
We are in the home stretch of this semester.
I have told my students that if they stick with it, by May they will be better readers than when they started back in August. I know this can happen, I just need the tools to help them get there. I appreciate DonorsChoose.org for being the catalyst to always help us achieve greater things in the classroom.
