Mrs. LaRussa from Saint Louis MO is requesting supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My special needs students need a slab roller to help them construct clay projects. My students need clay and glazes to create their clay sculptures.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
If I say the word, "clay," expect to hear screaming (joyous screaming). These type of projects are the "cherry on top" to most student's ideas of creating art. To see a student's face after they see their fired piece is priceless. Pure pride! Clay increases confidence and artistic expression.
I teach art to over 400 students who come from a high poverty, low income community.
We also have students that are in transition. Our students come to our school eager and excited to learn. Students at my school enjoy art, but their enthusiasm is overwhelming when they create anything that is three-dimensional. My hope is that all the students will have a chance to create a ceramic artwork.
My students will use the clay to create a three-dimensional sculpture. I have several students that are special needs and may have a difficult time rolling the clay with a rolling pin. The slab roller is perfect for helping students roll out the clay consistently flat. The students will use the glaze to give their project a colorful, finished look. The glaze gives the students a sense of pride when they realize the look and texture of the glaze is completely different than when they applied it to the bisque wear. It is a happy surprise!
My school's art budget has continued to decline year after year.
This decrease in the budget does not allow me to purchase materials that I believe my students need. For some students, drawing might not be their best form of expression and they think that art is all about making something realistic or painting "inside the lines." Ceramics always proves to be a successful triumph for all my students, no matter what skills they have.
