My students need 3 pencil sharpeners and pencils so that students can stay focused on learning instead of waiting for the pencil sharpener to cool down.
My worst nightmare is when the pencil sharpener overheats. When this happens there is nothing that we can do, but sit and wait until it cools off. The problem, however, is during that time my students lose focus and my normally delightful class turns into a complete circus.
We have one pencil sharpener that frequently burns out and as a result many of my students have to wait to begin their work until it cools down.
Since our school is located in an area of high need, our school does not have the resources to purchase new pencil sharpeners that work. My students are amazing individuals that have made great gains in writing this year. At the beginning of the year they struggled to write even a simple paragraph. Now, however, they have written their own original stories and essays. While my students have come a long way this year, the truth is that we still have a long way to go. The problem we are faced with is that the pencil sharpener is determining how much we can accomplish each day.
My Project
If you think about it, students need pencils for everything they do in school. They use their pencil to take notes, take exams, complete their assignments, write their homework in their planner. Without sharpened pencils it is impossible for my students to grow as learners. With a new pencil sharpeners my students will no longer have to wait to sharpen their pencils. This ultimately will maximize the amount of time each student is able to spend learning because they will not be forced to wait for the sharpener to cool down.. Gone will be the days where the pencil sharpener determines how much we can learn. Instead, students would be able to focus on meeting their individual learning goals!
It is unbelievable how something as simple as a pencil sharpener can have such a big impact in a classroom.
But it is true. A functioning pencil sharpener can make or break a classroom. This project will provide my students with the supplies we need to be successful. Without your help, it would be impossible for us to have a new pencil sharpener and pencils.
