My Students
My students move from place to place frequently during the day, whether we are in a group sitting together on the floor or at our assigned seats. Comfortable seating is important. Kindergarten students have a difficult time being still for long periods of time. A nice place would be inviting.
My classroom is a very diverse group, ranging from upper middle-class to lower income families.
This particular group of students also ranges from what I consider "gifted" to students needing extra instruction. Many families in our district are transient and their particular children need a structured/loving environment. I try to create a classroom that is bright, inviting, and stimulating. Having a great place to join for circle/floor time will help to create this environment. We are fortunate in our school district to be given a spending allowance each year for classroom materials, which I use to get the things I most need each year. This allowance, however, does not go for the things we always want.
My Project
I am requesting 1 carpet to sit on while we are doing whole group activities such as story listening, directed writing practice and reciting our sight words. Having a nice bright rug for those times we sit together will help to create that inviting space I am so desiring. The rug I have is small and drab and doesn't hold the little bodies comfortable without the children being in each others space. A large colorful carpet with designated spots will help to brighten our circle time area and bring that colorful and inviting area I am desiring in my classroom.
I am continually trying to improve upon creating an inviting learning atmosphere in my classroom.
This takes time and can often be costly. By creating this project I can achieve that environment that is so important to the learning process.
