My Students

I teach 6th and 7th grade special education. At my school we are working towards incorporating more reading and writing into every subject, which is my hope with these magazines. My goal is to make the lessons as engaging as possible and help my students develop a true love for reading.

We are a middle school in a semi-rural school district serving students from 6th-8th grade have hardworking 6th and 7th grade special education students with disabilities ranging from ADHD, learning disabilities, and Autism.

Many students in my classroom frequently do not have access to Internet and other technology at home. It can be difficult to find things that are motivating, so finding materials that they find interesting has a positive impact on their success. I think these magazines and non-fiction stories will be something they can connect with and develop interest in.

My Project

I am requesting several different sets of reading materials through Scholastic and TIME for Kids. These materials are engaging and interesting while incorporating all the necessary learning throughout. The materials are based on the Common Core Standards so they align with our curriculum while still being applicable to my students by featuring real world stories. They also feature an online component which helps my readers with diverse learning styles. These materials will also allow my class to incorporate reading in several subject areas, not just ELA.

This project will make a difference in my students' lives because it allows them to experience reading in new ways.

Engagement is extremely important and once they are interested in what they read, they will do it more often. I think this will help build their self-confidence as a reader which is a goal of mine, as reading is such a critical skill to learn for life.
