My students need activities for reading centers such as whisper phones and fluency card bank, inference activities and games, and comprehension skill builders.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are eager to learn and become better readers. A typical day in my classroom is filled with encouragement and goal setting. We strive to create daily and weekly goals as well as long term ones. OUR goal is to have ALL students reading at or above grade level by the end of the year.
I serve students in the heart of an urban school district.
They have a low socioeconomic status. 100% of my students receive free breakfast, lunch, and an after school meal. They come from a background of parents who struggle to meet the most basic needs. For many of my students, school is the place where they feel safe. But all of that doesn't stop them from having the desire to learn and succeed. They are hungry for knowledge and engaging activities.
Our school is striving for accreditation. We are almost there! My students want to be a part of getting us the accreditation we deserve! SUCCESS IS OUR ONLY OPTION!
The biggest challenges I face are having the materials to create engaging lessons and keeping my students meaningfully engaged 99.9% of the time.
“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.” (Dr. Seuss)
My Project
My students need whisper phones, inference activities and cards, compare and contrast materials, fluency cards and timers. Students will use these materials in individual centers, through group instruction, and with partners. Students will be able to practice fluency in their reading to become more confident readers. They will also practice making inference and compare and contrast strategies that will help them in life as well as prepare for the MAP test. They will also learn how to find important details in nonfiction material. Students in my class are more engaged when they have more than just worksheets to learn from.
My students want to become better readers. When I have students that have an intrinsic desire to learn, I want to rally behind them to create the best learning environment I can provide.
Having this project funded will help my students build reading and comprehension skills that will guide them through life.
When I have the materials to create fun and engaging lessons, my student attendance is higher. The dropout rate is significantly higher in our district when students don't understand the basic concepts needed to be able to move to the next level. Please consider investing in the lives of these very deserving students.
