My students need reading comprehension activities to focus on the skills they are missing, phonics/phonemic centers to learn the basics, and fluency games to sharpen skills.
My students work hard to be successful in the regular education classroom. Sometimes being successful just means finally understanding how long vowels work, or reading a passage with only 5 errors instead of 6. Reading is a challenge, so I hope to add fun games to help them along the way.
My students range in age from 6 to 12 years old.
They all have some type of learning disability. They are normal everyday kids who just take a little longer than others to pick up on some things. For the most part, my students are good at math, but really struggle with reading. Some can read well but don't comprehend what they read. Some can listen to a story and know exactly what is happening but can't read it on their own because they may only know a few words in an entire book.
We are nestled in a small, rural community with few resources. We are working with a tight budget. We have wonderful teachers who are some of the best and know everything there is to know about elementary education. We all work hard to support our students.
My Project
I plan to use the materials requested as learning centers in my classroom. I love having hands on activities for my students and these will add to that! My students will use the activities independently or with me in small group. I hope to use them to enrich our daily lessons. There are so many fun activities in this project that my students will never be bored. Most of them are easy to follow and can be used over and over again for years to come. They also seem to fit the needs of all my students, so everyone will get to enjoy them.
I have taught as LD teacher for 4 years now and I have not had classroom manipulatives to use with my students.
My class budget has also been small and has not allowed me to build my class supplies. These games and activities will make learning easier for my student because they seem to have a better understanding of reading concepts when they get to do it themselves rather just listen to me or do a worksheet. I am excited to see the outcome and watch as my students become successful.
