Speech is fun! Gone are the days of drill and practice. Now we know that if we engage students with fun games and activities, they make better progress towards their speech and language goals.
We serve 45 students weekly in our rural school in the areas of speech and language.
Our students range from kindergarten to 9th grade. Disabilities range from sound system disorder to more severe disabilities and medical diagnoses. It's a big range with a variety of interests! We try to tailor our therapy sessions to the individual student. Each student has an IEP with goals for articulation and/or language skills. We see our students from 60-120 minutes a week.
My Project
My students need an iPad. Bringing technology into the speech room will help engage my students and specifically target each individual goal at their level. Students will use learning apps which I have already found and researched to read, complete language activities, target articulation, and much more. Students will use the iPad both individually, through peer work, and in small group instruction. As students use an iPad in the class, they will also be showing leadership as they work with one another on assigned projects, as well as learn responsibility in taking care of new classroom technology.
By using the iPad for articulation and language practice, students will be able to use apps specifically designed to target and give automatic constructive and positive feedback for correct responses in a different way.
Students will be able to play against each other and themselves as a way to constantly improve. Technology is our future. Students are our future. Educating is about moving forward, not backward. Help me move my students towards their goals with this iPad!
