I believe that hands on learning is the best way to teach students. Team Allen uses manipulatives every day to strengthen their math knowledge and understanding. Students utilize place value blocks, coins, shape pieces, fraction strips, and many more material to deepen their math sense.
My class is made up of 25 seven and eight-year-old students who are excited and active learners.
They come to school with smiling faces and eager minds ready to learn new things. I teach in the largest elementary school in Springfield, Missouri where 600 students attend. We are also a Title I school but don't receive any Title I funding. Therefore, all interventions have to be completed by the classroom teacher. I meet with small groups during our math workshop time in order to provide more direct instruction. Every day, my students work hard with manipulatives in these small groups. However, most of my students' time is spent sorting through our math supplies in order to find the correct tools to use with their assignments. My students need an organized space to store manipulatives for quick and easy access.
My Project
The addition of cubbies will help my class quickly find the math materials they need. This will allow students more time to focus on their work or math games instead of digging through supplies. The storage bins in the cubbies will be labeled as well. The easy to read picture labels will provide all of my students the opportunity to collect any materials they need independently, work on their assignments, and develop a deeper understand of various math concepts.
By supporting my project, you will help provide a positive and organized classroom where students can independently use materials to support their learning.
Math manipulatives are a critical part in hands on learning. They allow all of my students, especially my English as second language learners, to understand various math concepts. The addition of a cubby system will instill a sense of responsibility and organizational skills for my students.
