My Students
Research shows that if we sit too long, our bodies and brains turn off. That is why I want to do "alternative seating" in my classroom. Alternative seating means that the children sit on things other than traditional chairs. Yoga balls and stools will help them with this.
The students in my class are amazing!
They come from impoverished households, broken homes, and other external struggles. However, they don't let these things hold them back. The children in my classroom love to learn. They are very active and need to move.
Our school is a small community charter school in a very diverse historic neighborhood. The students all come from the neighborhood and either walk or are brought by their parents. Our school offers a lot of freedom in terms of how classrooms are run and how teachers teach to best meet the needs of our students. It is a place filled with imagination, joy, and learning.
My Project
The yoga balls with bases and stools would provide seating for the students as an alternative to the traditional plastic school chairs. The children would be able to choose the kind of seat that would work best for them. These seats would teach them responsibility and self awareness. The students will also be able to sync their bodies and minds as they sit upright on the balls and stools as opposed to slouching in traditional chairs. It will also make the classroom a more inviting, child-friendly space.
This project will make a difference by providing my students with comfortable, flexible seats that will enable them to focus and expend their energy in a productive way.
The yoga balls, bases, and stools will help them to learn about themselves and will give them choices in the classroom. Having choices will help them to learn to advocate for themselves.
